The field of archaeology studies human history by performing excavations and subsequent analysis of various locations around the world. Concerning the Bible, there have been over 25,000 discoveries which have only complemented and never contradicted the things spoken of in its pages. As a result, this area of research has given us outstanding evidence to put trust in the events that are recorded in the Gospels concerning Jesus Christ.
- The Stone Pavement mentioned in So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.John 19:13 where Jesus was scourged, was uncovered in Israel. Carved into the stone itself is the title that John gave, ‘The Stone Pavement’.
- Pool of Siloam from [Jesus] said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.John 9:7, where Jesus healed a blind man by making mud with dirt and saliva, has been discovered in Jerusalem.
- Jacob’s Well mentioned in Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.John 4:6, where Jesus sat down with the Samaritan woman has been uncovered.
- The Pool of Bethesda mentioned in Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.John 5:2, where Jesus healed the invalid was found with five porticos just as it was described in the Bible.
- In 1990 archaeologists believe they found the Ossuary or bone box of Caiaphas, the high priest who oversaw Jesus’ crucifixion ( Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.Matthew 26:57).
- In 1961 a large limestone pillar was discovered that mentioned Pontius Pilate ( And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.Mark 15:1), the Roman prefect of Judea, who also played a big role in Jesus’ crucifixion.
- In 1968 the bones of a man who was crucified were found with a seven inch iron spike that was driven through the heel bone. This find serves as proof that crucifixion was a means of execution, which until then some skeptics had debated as to whether or not it was really used.
As you can see, based off of this small list of examples, the places and people mentioned in the Gospels completely match up with the archaeological record we have today. It is important to note that if the story of Jesus is false, especially in regards to people such as Caiaphas and Pilate, upon hearing about this message being spread around Israel, they would have immediately denounced it, thus killing the message upon its rise. But we have absolutely no record of them doing such a thing.
