Glossary of Terms

Following is a list of terms that have been required to look up to further understand concepts, arguments, and doctrines in my studies. If I've had to look them up, someone else will too, so here is my personal glossary to be of aid to anyone.
  • Abolition - Formally put an end to.
  • Affinity - A spontaneous or natural liking or sympathy for someone or something.
  • Altruism - The belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others.
  • Apace - Swiftly, quickly.
  • Axiom - A statement or proposition that is regarded as being established, accepted, or self-evidently true.
  • Bathetic - An effect of anticlimax created by an unintentional lapse in mood from the sublime to the trivial or ridiculous.
  • Beneficent - Generous or doing good.
  • Benevolent - Well meaning and kindly.
  • Bourgeoisie - The social class between the lower and upper.
  • Conquest - The conquering and assumption of control of a people or place by use of military force.
  • Contemptible - The feeling that a person or thing is beneath consideration, worthless, or deserving scorn.
  • Crypto-Evangelist - Trying to persuade others not to persuade others.
  • Deduction - The inference of particular instances by reference to a general law or principle.
  • De Facto - In reality or fact
  • Diabolical - Belonging to or so evil as to recall the Devil.
  • Dignity - The state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect.
  • Disparage - Regard or represent as being of little worth.
  • Dulce - A sweet food or drink, esp. a candy or jam.
  • Dulce et Decorum - Sweetness and decorated.
  • Enterprise - A project or undertaking, typically one that is difficult or requires effort.
  • Ethnocentric - Evaluating other peoples and cultures according to the standards of one's own culture.
  • Eugenics - The science of improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics.
  • Experimentum Crucis - Critical Experiment.
  • Fascism - An authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization.
  • Fatuous - Silly and pointless.
  • Flout - Openly disregard.
  • Gehenna - A deep valley lining the territories between the tribes of Benjamin and Judah. It became notorious because of the idolatrous practices that were carried out there in the days of Judah’s kings Ahaz and Manasseh. Later it was used for burning the city's refuse and the dead bodies of criminals. During the time between the Old Testament's end and the New Testament's beginning, it became a term used to define the final punishment of the wicked. It was common enough that Jesus' used it in his references to hell.
  • Gelding - A castrated animal, esp. a male horse.
  • Grace - The free, unmerited, not earned favor or good of God given to us.
  • Hades - The Greek word for the Abode of the Dead. When the scribes were translating the septuagint (The Greek translation of the Old Testament), they used this word which was Sheol in Hebrew.
  • Heterodox - Departure from accepted beliefs or standards.
  • Hitherto - Up until now.
  • Ideal - Existing only in the imagination; desirable or perfect but not likely to become a reality.
  • Imperative - Giving an authoritative command.
  • Indicative - Serving as a sign or indication of something.
  • Inter Alia - Among other things.
  • Intrinsic - Belonging naturally; essential.
  • Jingoist - Extreme patriotism, esp. in the form of aggressive or warlike foreign policy.
  • Magnanimous - Very generous or forgiving, esp. toward a rival or someone less powerful than oneself.
  • Mercy - Leniency or compassion shown to an offender by a person or agency charged with administering justice.
  • Metaphysical - The philosophical study of being and knowing.
  • Midden - A dunghill or refuse heap.
  • Obiter Dicta - A judge’s incidental expression of opinion, not essential to the decision and not establishing precedent.
  • Paralogism - A piece of illogical or fallacious reasoning, esp. one that appears superficially logical or that the reasoner believes to be logical.
  • Pejorative - Expressing contempt of disapproval.
  • Piety - The quality of being religious, reverent, dutiful.
  • Pince-nez - A pair of eyeglasses with a nose clip instead of earpieces.
  • Pons Asinorum - The point where many students fail, especially with a theory of formula that is difficult to grasp.
  • Posterity - All future generations of people.
  • Pragmatic - Dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical consideration.
  • Precept - A doctrine which is taught.
  • Predicate - Something that is confirmed or denied concerning an argument or proposition.
  • Progressive - Favoring or implementing social reform or new, liberal ideas.
  • Propaganda - Information, esp. of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
  • Propagate - Speak and promote (an idea, theory, knowledge, etc.) widely.
  • Rational - Based on or in accordance with reason or logic.
  • Rationality - Someone who emphasizes observable facts and excludes metaphysical speculation about origins and ultimate causes.
  • Reflective - Relating to or characterized by deep thought; thoughtful.
  • Secundum Litteram - Accordingly Letter.
  • Sensibility - The ability to appreciate and respond to complex emotional or aesthetic influences.
  • Sentiment - A view of or attitude toward a situation or event; an opinion.
  • Sheol - The Old Testament word for the 'Place of the Dead'. It is also known as the underworld, ravine and chasm.
  • Stultify - Cause to appear foolish or absurd.
  • Sublime - Of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe.
  • Substance - The quality of being important, valid, or significant.
  • Subterfuge - Deceit used in order to achieve one’s goal.
  • Sui Generis - Unique.
  • Temporal - Limited by time.
  • Venal - Showing or motivated by susceptibility to bribery.
  • Virtue - Behavior showing high moral standards.
  • Wresting - Forcibly pull (something) from someone's grasp.
  • υλη - Copy, material, matter, stuff.
