Term Definition
Agnosticism

The belief that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God.

Antinomianism

One who holds that under the gospel dispensation of grace the moral law is of no use or obligation because faith alone is necessary to salvation.

Apocrypha

Literraly 'hidden' which is a collection of books typically included in the canon of Roman Catholic scripture, but are excluded from the canon of Protestants and Jews.

Apologetics

Reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine.

Apostle

Each of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ and Paul or the first successful Christian missionary to a particular group or area.

Atonement

The work that Christ did in his life and death to earn our salvation.

Blessed

1) Held in reverence : venerated (the blessed saints).<br/> 2) Honored in worship : hallowed (the blessed Trinity).<br/> 3) Of or enjoying happiness specifically: enjoying the bliss of heaven - used as a title for a beatified person.<br/> 4) Bringing pleasure, contentment, or good fortune.

Book of Mormon

The sacred text of the Latter Day Saints which are also known as Mormons. It was first published in March of 1830 by Joseph Smith.

Canon

A term which refers to the Christian Bible, which consists of the Old Testament (39 Books) and New Testament (27 Books).

Cult

A religious group that adheres to a specific theology which is the result of twisting and bending scripture to their will, thereby rendering salvation unattainable.

Decree

A word of God that causes something to happen.

Didactic

A document which is intended to teach; often having moral instruction as an ulterior motive

Disciple

A personal follower of Jesus during his life, especially one of the twelve Apostles.

Dispensation

An exemption from a law or from an impediment, vow, or oath.

Doctrine & Covenants

A book considered to be Holy Scripture to the Latter Day Saints movement whom are also known as Mormons. It was originally published in 1835 and contains 'revelations' of Joseph Smith as well as some of his successors.

Essence

A set of properties that an object or person has; without which that object or person would not exist.

Evangelist

A person who seeks to convert others to the Christian faith, especially by public preaching.

Exegesis

Critical explanation or interpretation of a text.

Faith

Complete trust and confidence in someone or something.

Forbear

To hold oneself back from, especially with an effort.

Gospel

Literally 'the good news' which is a term used to describe the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through whom we may be granted salvation.

Grace

An unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification.

Hadith

The collection of traditions which contain the sayings of the prophet Muhammad, and accounts of his daily practices (the Sunna). It is the major source of guidance for Muslims outside of the Quran.

Haphazardly

In random manner or without care.

Heresy

A belief or opinion that is contrary to orthodox religious doctrine.

Holy

1) Exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness.<br/> 2) Devoted entirely to the deity or the work of the deity.

Incarnation

The act of God the Son where he took to himself a human nature.

Inerrancy

Incapable of being wrong. As it regards the Bible, it means that it is not and can not be wrong about anything it says.

Justify

1) To prove or show to be just, right, or reasonable.<br/> 2) To show to have had a sufficient legal reason.<br/> 3) To qualify (oneself) as a surety by taking oath to the ownership of sufficient property.

Major Doctrine

A doctrine that has significant impact on our thinking about other doctrines and how we live the Christian life.

Messiah

Literally 'the anointed one' which in the New Testament is translated as 'the Christ'. Jesus is the one who was promised in Genesis 3:15 and anointed by God in Matthew 3:16.

Minor Doctrine

A doctrine that has little impact on our thinking about other doctrines and how we live the Christian life.

Modalism

The doctrine that the persons of the Trinity represent only three modes or aspects of God, not distinct and coexisting persons.

Monotheism

The doctrine or belief that there is one God.

Paradox

A seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true.

Pearl of Great Price

Part of the standard works of the Latter Day Saints whom are also known as Mormons. It contains five sections which contain parts of the 'Book of Moses', the 'Book of Abraham', 'Joseph Smiths - Matthew', 'Joseph Smith - History', and the 'Articles of Faith'.

Pons Asionorum

The point at which many students fail, especially in regards to a theory or formula that is difficult to grasp.

Prima Facie

A Latin expression meaning on its first appearance, or by first instance; at first sight.

Prophecy

A message directly from God through a human, which often include details of things that have not yet come to pass, in order to prove the origin of the message.

Prophet

A person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God.

Propitiate

To gain or regain the favor or goodwill of.

Quran

The sacred book of Islam, whose name literally means 'recitation' which is believed to have been dictated by the angel Gabriel to the prophet Muhammad over a period of twenty-three years. It consists of 114 chapters (Suras) of various lengths, which are organized from longest to shortest.

Redeem

To free from captivity by payment of ransom.

Religion

1) An organized system of belief that generally seeks to understand purpose, meaning, goals, and methods of spiritual things. These spiritual things can be God, people in relation to God, salvation, after life, purpose of life, order of the cosmos, etc.<br/> 2) Man's attempt to reach God.

Resurrection

The event of Christ's rising from the dead three days after being crucified on the cross.

Righteous

Acting in accord with divine or moral law. Free from guilt or sin.

Saint

A person acknowledged as holy or virtuous and typically regarded as being in heaven after death.

Salvation

Deliverance from sin and its consequences, which is achieved only by having faith in Christ.

Sanctify

1) To set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use or consecrate.<br/> 2) To free from sin or purify.

Scripture

Any part of the Bible itself, which consists of the Old Testament (39 Books) and New Testament (27 Books).
